What?

  • Weekly spelling tests

Why?

  • The objective of these weekly spelling tests is to practice writing and reading Grade 1 high frequency words, learn to identify basic and complex sounds, and to enhance overall French vocabulary.

When will it start?

  • Our first dictée will be Friday, January 13th
  • The first 5 dictées will be a review of all the sight words we learned in Term 1
  • Once we have completed this review, I will begin choosing dictée words based on sounds. We have already learned all of the basic sounds in French, so the dictée will be one way for me to start teaching the complex sounds (e.g. words containing the sound “ch”, “on”, etc.)

What is the format?

  • Each week on Monday, your child will bring home a list of the dictée words as well as a booklet containing various practice activities.
  • Your child will begin working in their practice booklet on Monday at school. Whatever is not completed in class should be completed at home.  You are not expected to send the practice booklets back to school, but rather use these booklets throughout the week to review the words.
  • In addition, students will have the chance to practice spelling words in class during our Daily 5 literacy program.
  • Each Friday, I will dictate the words while the students record them. I will also give them a surprise sentence containing a few of the dictée words as well as other more difficult words.  The goal of the sentence is to see if students are also able to hear and record sounds in unknown words.
  • Your child’s dictée will be sent home every Friday in their pochette. Please sign and return to school on Monday.

What do I need to do to practice the dictée at home?

  • As previously mentioned, every Monday your child will bring home a booklet containing the new dictée words and various practice activities. Please help them to complete any work they were unable to complete in class.
  • You are also encouraged to visit the class blog where I will post a dictée page containing the weekly words as well as creative ideas on how to practice them at home.

How long is appropriate to practice the dictée?

  • Please remember that the dictée is only ONE portion of a multi-faceted literacy program.
  • If your time is limited please focus on daily READING with your child
  • Practice time will vary depending on your child – remember that short, daily practice sessions are more effective than long chunks of time less frequently
  • Games like Bingo, Memory or Go Fish are a great way to quickly review the words in a way that will engage your child
