Class Information


Items Kept at School

If you have not already done so, please provide the following items to be kept in the classroom:

  • Inside shoes (for in the gym and in the class)
  • A complete change of clothes in a sealed plastic bag (underwear, socks, pants, shirt)
  • An art smock
  • A box of Kleenex

Clothing and Footwear

Inside/Outside Shoes – The children need a pair of “inside” shoes and a pair of “outside” shoes. As they change their shoes many times throughout the day, please ensure that the shoes you have supplied are easy for your child to independently get on and off!  Ideally students will also be able to wear their inside shoes to gym.

Change of Clothes – Your child needs a full change of clothes at school in case of accidents. Please put all items in a clearly labeled Ziploc bag AND please label each individual item of clothing as well.


In lieu of agendas, we will be using the “pochette” (blue plastic envelope) to facilitate communication between home and school. The pochette will go home every afternoon and MUST be returned to school every morning.  The objective of using the pochette is to get students in the habit of looking after forms/newsletters and to facilitate communication between home and school. Parents are asked to check the pochette for forms and notes on a daily basis.


Parents are invited to put a note in their child’s pochette if there is something they wish to communicate (questions/clarification, appointments, pick- up change, etc.). We will be checking these on a daily basis and will get back to you in a timely manner.  We are happy to speak to parents informally before or after school, but if you would like to discuss something in detail, please arrange an appointment ahead of time.  There are two formal meeting periods during the year for parents to meet with their child’s teachers. However, we are happy to meet between these periods if needed.  Please contact the school office to set up a meeting or put a note in your child’s pochette.

Home Reading

Our home reading program will begin at a later date – we will send home more information then.

Snack and Lunch

Snack – Students will be taking their snack outside with them at recess. We encourage you to send a healthy snack such as fruit, yogurt, veggies, hard-boiled egg, etc., so that your child feels energized and prepared to learn. We also suggest that you put your child’s snack in a Ziploc bag or disposable container as they will be running around on the playground once they have finished (otherwise containers tend to go missing on the playground!).

Lunch – Primary Students will go outside to play from 12:10-12:30. At 12:30, a bell will signal for the students to go to the lunch room to eat either their hot lunch or packed lunch together at the tables.  **Students will be responsible for remembering to eat their own lunch during this time and must finish before going back outside to play.


Children are welcome to bring in a treat to celebrate their birthday.  Please let us know in advance so that we can set aside a time in the day to do this and notify the other parents of children with specific allergies.



Gym/Dance – Gym and Dance days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  Please ensure that your child wears appropriate clothing on gym/dance days.  For girls, it is best to wear pants instead of skirts.

Library – When the library is open, we will be going there once a week for a book exchange. The confirmed day and time will be on our class schedule that will be finalized later. Please ensure that your child returns his/her library books on or before this day so that he/she can take out new books regularly.

Candy, Toys, and Supplies

Please refrain from sending candy to school. Students are not permitted to bring toys to school, as they are often lost and serve as a distraction in the classroom. The teachers will confiscate toys if they see them and it will be the responsibility of the student to remember to retrieve it at the end of the day.

We also ask the students not to bring any extra individual art supplies to school with them to school. If you wish to donate supplies or art materials to the class, please let one of us know.

Allergy Allert

There are students in our class who have severe food allergies to peanuts and tree nuts. Please make sure that you do not send food containing any of these ingredients in your child’s snack or lunch. For this reason, students are NOT permitted to share food under any circumstance (unless previously arranged with the classroom teacher).

**Please let us know if your child has any allergies that we should be aware of.


We will soon be providing specific ways for you to support you child’s learning at home in a Grade 1 Parents Information Package.

Please ensure that your child:

  1. Arrives on time and is ready to begin the day.       This includes: a good night’s sleep, a nutritious breakfast and a healthy snack in their lunch.
  2. Stays home if they are unwell.

Please also ensure that we are aware of any upcoming lates/absences.

As you already know, we will be using our class blog ( to share with you important information about our Grade 1 classroom throughout the year. If you have not already done so, please follow the blog by submitting your e-mail and clicking on the button labeled “Follow” on the right-hand side of the page. This will enable you to receive an e-mail every time I put up a new post.  This will be crucial in keeping you up-to-date with the latest news from Division 21F!

Parent Volunteers

We would greatly appreciate parent volunteers in the class once we have established classroom routines. We will be sending home a volunteer form in the next few weeks.
